Project 2: Temporal Processing:

Who?
People who are 18-30 years old with normal hearing or 65-85 years old with normal hearing or some hearing loss. American English must be your first language.
Where?
Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, Lefrak Hall at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD.
What does it involve?
You will be seated in a sound booth and will listen to sentences, tones, or noise bursts. You will be asked to push a button when you hear a particular sound, repeat words or sentences you hear, or watch a video while we record your brainwaves to the sounds presented.
How long does it take?
The initial evaluation to determine your eligibility to participate is 2 hours. Subsequent visits (Pre-training, Training, and Post-training) total approximately 25 hours.
Project 3: Speech and Cognition:

Who?
People who are 18-30 years old or 65-85 years old. American English must be your first language and you must have normal hearing.
Where?
Appointments will be in the Department of Hearing & Speech Sciences, LeFrak Hall, UMD and in the Maryland Neuroimaging Center, UMD.
What does it involve?
If you are 18-30 years old, you will answer questions about what you hear during computer-based listening activities. Your brain activity will also be observed while listening to sounds during two scanning sessions.
If you are 65-85 years old, you will answer questions based on listening activities both in the lab and during remote at‐home sessions using provided computers. Your brain activity will also be observed while listening to sounds during three scanning sessions.
How long does it take?
If you are 18-30 years old, initial eligibility evaluation (2 hours) + listening activity and MEG scan (2 hours) + computer testing and MRI scan (2 hours) = 6 hours total.
If you are 65-85 years old, initial evaluation (to determine eligibility): 2 hours. Computer testing, scans, and at‐home training: up to 20 hours.
